Finisher - Architectural woodworking - Long Island

Job Description

PAGE Consulting, LLC is representing a dynamic and growing Architectural Woodworking company out on Long island, and due to their continued growth, a position as Sr. Finisher has opened up.

  

The right candidate must have at least 10 years of experience in all aspects of custom Architectural Woodwork finishes. Knowledge of all AWI finishing systems including both solvent and waterborne finishes is required, as is a solid command of color-matching principles. The successful candidate’s skill set must also include a full understanding of proper sanding, sealing, staining, glazing, and spraying techniques. The ability to read shop drawings is a plus. This candidate must be able to work with others, be self-motivated, pleasant-mannered, and be a team player. 


Primary Responsibilities:

1. Color matching and preparation of samples.

2. Quality oversight of sanding and finishing

3. Quality Control of finishes

4. Interface and coordination with Finishing Manager and Production

5. Training of existing and new employees as needed.


Color Matching and preparation of samples

  • Receive and prepare raw Veneer and Hardwood samples.
  • Match control sample exactly and/or prepare original samples using stains, dyes, washcoats, glazes, toners, etc. to achieve consistency and clarity with the least labor-intensive production methods.
  • Record and organize formulas and coloring steps for future reference and use.
  • Assure that samples to be submitted to the architect/client are clean, without defects, and representative of the quality PGS will obtain in a production run.
  • Organize and protect finish samples for future reference.


Quality Control

  • Review job details, batching requirements, stain and finish types, sanding and finish requirements.
  • Monitor quality
  • Troubleshoot problems as they arise.
  • Monitor quality of components coming from production, work with Production to  remedy problem items.
  • Monitor quality and appropriateness of sanding in detail, including easing of edges, removal of edge banding glue and tear out, assembly and handling glue and defects, etc.
  • Assure that all parts needing batching are finished together or that transitional pieces are used to maintain consistency and evenness of color, fill and sheen.
  • Use control sample to maintain absolute fidelity to control sample for all parts, even when veneer changes or hardwood is introduced, again to maintain consistency and evenness of color, fill and sheen.
  • Inspect parts to assure that all edges, reveals, visible and semi-visible surfaces are finished to the same high standard as the more prominent surfaces.
  • Ensure that all backs and unseen surfaces are adequately sealed to protect them from moisture infiltration and to provide adequate balance to prevent bowing, warping, or discoloration. 


Training of existing and new employees as needed.

  • Observe and assess current techniques and skill levels.
  • Create a plan for upgrading skill levels if needed.


The position is paying in the $125-175k range depending on experience plus my client offers a solid health insurance benefits package and 401k plan. The right candidate must have an in-house union construction background, multiple states, and unions.
